November 15 – 19, 2021

We do not have spelling words this week.

We are reading aloud books about Thanksgiving and fall. We are also practicing our Turkey Trouble reader’s theater. We can’t wait to perform for our parents on Friday!

In writing time, we are writing a story to go along with the turkeys we decorated at home. Our writing piece will be convincing the reader that we are not a turkey.

We are reading and learning about the history of the balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. During math time we are planning and constructing our own Thanksgiving parade balloons. We can’t wait to show these to our parents on Friday also!

Parents who can attend our reader’s theater performance on Friday at 10:00 a.m. are welcome to take their student with them and start their Thanksgiving break. We will also video our performance for parents who cannot attend.

November 8 – 12, 2021

In phonics this week we are working on l blends.

This week we are reading books about zoo animals in anticipation of our zoo field trip on Friday.

During math we are continuing our study of place value. We are working to understand place value to 100 and using base 10 blocks to model numbers. Here is an example of base 10 blocks:

In writing this week we are continuing writing narrative stories in books. We will share our disguised turkeys as students bring them to school. Next week we will write about our disguised turkeys.

We are all looking forward to our field trip to the zoo on Friday! We will load buses and leave the school about 8:15 a.m. We plan to be back at the school by 1:30 p.m. Parents attending the field trip with us are welcome to check their child out at the zoo.

November 1 – 5, 2021

This week in phonics we are working on r blends.

Our spelling words this week are: put, man, away, very, been, drop, tree, cry, brag & tray.

The books we are reading together this week are all by Mo Willems.

During math we teen numbers and understanding the place value in teen numbers. We are working to understand that the 1 in a teen number stands for a group of 10 and the 2nd digit in a teen number is what’s not in the group of 10.

In writing workshop we will be working on narrative stories and will begin making books as opposed to just writing in our journals.

October 25 – 29, 2021

In phonics this week we are working on s blends.

Our spelling words this week are: us, but, play little, from, spot, skin, small, star & snack

We are reading Halloween themed books again during read aloud this week.

In math time, we are working on missing addends, using doubles to solve harder problems, and adding 3 addends. We are also working on problems with missing addends in problem solving.

In writing this week we are discovering how author’s make their writing better and how we can do the same thing by adding details and telling more.

We will also carve a class jack-o-lantern this week and write about it.

The book fair is going on in the library through this week. Students are enjoying shopping for books. You can send cash or set up an e-wallet to make it easier for your child to shop for books. Mrs. Skeen, our librarian, sent home a note about this previously.

October 18 – October 22, 2021

This week in phonics we are working on -ck at the end of a word and also the sound of -ing.

Our spelling words this week are: have, are, into, said, that, king, ring, pack, neck & deck.

We are reading Halloween themed books during read aloud this week.

During math this week we are working on doubles facts and doubles + 1 facts. When we learn our doubles facts, they help us know our doubles + 1 facts quickly. For example, if we know 4 + 4 = 8, then we can get 4 + 5 = 9 quickly.

In writing this week we are revising and rewriting a previous piece that we will read to our parents at parent teacher conferences. We are also choosing what writing goals we want to focus on.

Our read-a-thon fundraiser is still going and our class is doing well! Keep logging minutes at home!

October 11 – 15, 2021

This week in phonics we are practicing reading and writing CVC words. CVC words have a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant. Examples: cat, bed, hit, mop, sun

Our spelling words this week are: out, back, make, of, now, tap, yet, fin, hot, & bun.

This week during read aloud we will continue comparing fiction & non-fiction books.

During math this week we are reviewing all the skills we’ve learned so far and practicing those that need a little extra work.

In writing time this week we will listen to the story, Crankenstein. We will write what makes us cranky and what makes us feel better and decorate our piece like the character Crankenstein.

Our Read-a-thon fundraiser starts today. We are logging our minutes read during our silent reading time at school. We would love it if you will log students’ minutes read at home too. Also, students can earn some in-class prizes if parent’s make an account and share the link to our fundraiser on Facebook. We appreciate your help and support!

October 4 – 8, 2021

This week in phonics we will finish our study of word families.

Our spelling words this week are: his, did, was, one, came, sun, fun, bug, rug, & cub.

This week during our read aloud time we will be comparing fiction and non-fiction books.

During math time, we will evaluate equations to decide if they are true or false, find number sentences that equal other number sentences & find missing addends to 20 using 10 frames & counters.

During writing workshop we will continue practicing adding details to our pictures. Adding details to our pictures will help us to add more details with our words in our writing.

Information will come home tomorrow about our Read-a-thon fundraiser.

September 27 – October 1, 2021

In our continuation of word families this week, we will be working on short i and short o word families.

Our spelling words this week are: him, or, look, her, had, dig, hip, top, got & dog.

The books we will read as a class are counting books.

During writing workshop, we will discuss more ways to find writing ideas. We will also work on drawing people and landscapes in our illustrations.

In math this week, we are continuing ways to make 10. We are working on finding a missing amount if we know part and the total. An example would be: There are 6 frogs on a log. Some frogs are in the water. There are 9 frogs altogether. How many frogs are in the water? We will do this in problem solving and also with pictures and manipulatives.

September 20 – 24, 2021

We are continuing our study of word families this week in phonics. This week we will focus on short e and short i word families.

Our spelling words this week are: how, has, as, by, get, hen, ten, let, set & bin.

This week our read alouds will all be by the author Kevin Henkes. We will discuss characteristics of Kevin Henkes’ books.

In math this week we are working more on addition and subtraction. We will practice adding and subtracting on a number path. We will learn that addition sentences can be added in any order. We will practice finding a missing addend in a number sentence, using a picture model.

In honor of Johnny Appleseed, we will learn about him on Friday and do some related activities.
