March 7 – 11, 2022

In phonics this week we are learning about compound words.

Our spelling words this week are: get, cut, bump, gift, cliff, bath, mailbox, butterfly, grandmother, inside, & football.

During read aloud, we are reading books by Bob Graham.

In writing we are finishing our pieces that will be published in a book. Look for information to come home about this very soon. You will be able to order a book that has every student’s piece in it. The kids are excited to see it!

In math, we are learning about 3D shapes.

Report cards will come home on Thursday of this week. Reminder, spring break is next week!

February 28 – March 4, 20222

In phonics this week we are reviewing r-controlled vowels and doing Dr. Seuss-themed activities..

Our spelling words this week are: I’m, don’t, than, got, your, card, ruler, whirl, short & churn.

To celebrate Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss’ birthday, we are reading Dr. Seuss books this week.

In writing, we are working on a piece that will eventually be published into a book. We will be writing about what we want to be when we grow up.

This week in math we are reviewing skills we have learned this 9 weeks.

February 21 – 25, 2022

In phonics this week we are working on the vowel sounds that y makes.

Our spelling words this week are: when, were, over, then, will, candy, fly, by, only, baby.

Our read aloud books this week are all about traveling. We will discuss what you can learn by traveling to new places, whether real or imaginary.

In writing this week we finished publishing our president report about either George Washington or Abe Lincoln by creating a Chatterpix. We will begin a writing project that will result in a published class book.

In math this week we are learning about 2 D shapes.

On Friday, our class is will be presenting the Champs Assembly to our school. The rest of the school will be watching from their classrooms via Zoom. Parents are welcome to come to watch in person. It will begin at 8 a.m. and lasts only 5-10 minutes.

February 14 – 18, 2022

This will be our last week to practice r-controlled vowels in phonics.

For our read aloud books this week, we are reading books with a February theme…Rose are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink, Just Going to the Dentist, Duck for President, & Abe Lincoln’s Hat.

In writing we are learning and writing about Abe Lincoln and George Washington. We will make a digital product about one of them by the end of the week. Look for it in Seesaw! We are learning to use the Book Creator app to make stories.

In math this week we are learning how to tell time to the half hour.

Reminders: We will have an early release on Wednesday, February 16th and there is no school on Monday, February 21st.

February 7 – 11, 2022

In phonics this week we are learning about r-controlled vowels again: ar, er, ir, or & ur.

We are reading Valentine’s Day books in read aloud time.

During math this week we will be learning about time to the hour on an analog clock.

Because we missed the end of last week, we have been finishing our All About Groundhogs books during writing workshop time.

Reminder: our Valentine’s Day party will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. We are having ice cream sundaes and opening our Valentines. Please send a Valentine for each friend in our class and a decorated container of some kind (bag, box, etc.) for your student to collect their Valentines in.

We are having another great week in first grade!

January 31 – February 4, 2022

In phonics this week we are learning about r-controlled vowels: ar, er, ir, or & ur.

Our read aloud books this week are all humorous stories.

During math we are practicing counting by 5’s to 100.

In writing we are learning facts about groundhogs in honor of Groundhog’s Day on Wednesday. We will write a non-fiction book about groundhogs.

January 24 – 28, 2022

In phonics this week we are learning the sounds of these vowel teams: ou, oa, ie & igh.

We will not have spelling words this week.

Our read aloud books this week all have to do with answering questions about animals.

During math, we are practicing balancing equations. For example, does 7+3 = 4 + 5? Another example would be what is a number sentence that is the same as 8+2?

On Tuesday, we will celebrate the 100th day of school by doing activities that all have to do with the number 100.

Wednesday is an early release day for students at 11:30 a.m. Teachers will have professional development.

December 13 – 17, 2021

This week we have been doing Christmas activities and making a present for our parents. We have also been finishing up a few assessements.

We can’t wait for our Christmas party on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

December 6 – 10, 2021

In phonics this week we are working on words with a silent e at the end. We are learning that the silent e makes the vowel say it’s name.

Our spelling words this week are: there, because, where, could, before, dime, name, cube, glue & plane.

We are reading Christmas themed books this week.

During math we are assessing the skills we have learned this 9 weeks. We will review all the things we have learned as well.

In writing this week we are researching and writing a report about reindeer.

November 29 – December 3, 2021

In phonics this week we are learning the sounds that sh, ch & th make. (These are called digraphs.)

Our spelling words this week are: after, with, they, going, this, thing, shop, ship, chat & chin.

We are reading non-fiction books this week. We will discuss features of non-fiction books.

During math, we will continue our place value study by talking about greater than & less than, determining what is 10 more or 10 less than any number, and practice ordering numbers to 100.

In writing workshop this week we will be writing letters to Santa. Our letters will be sent to the White Oak Independent newspaper to be printed. (Before being mailed to Santa, of course. 😉)
